The Moroccan government, alongside the European Union and key European partners, has unveiled a groundbreaking €348 million initiative to bolster the nation’s water policy. The launch, announced on Tuesday, brings together the Ministry of Equipment and Water, the EU, Germany, France, and Italy under a unified Team Europe approach.
This innovative program is structured around a €48 million EU grant, supplemented by three low-interest loans of €100 million each. The financing is coordinated by France’s AFD, Italy’s CDP, and Germany’s KfW, ensuring a robust and diversified funding model for the initiative.
The primary goal of this European-backed support is to reinforce Morocco’s public water policies through four strategic pillars: enhancing water resource knowledge amid climate change pressures, strengthening resilience against extreme weather like droughts and floods, safeguarding water quality and biodiversity, and protecting groundwater reserves.
Aligned with the Morocco-EU Green Partnership, launched in October 2022, and the 2025 Mediterranean Pact, this initiative underscores shared priorities in climate resilience and sustainable water management. It also complements Morocco’s existing efforts, including its National Water Plan and the 2020-2027 National Drinking Water and Irrigation Supply Program (PNAEPI).
