Morocco awarded CAN 2025 title: Senegal challenges ruling at Court of Arbitration for Sport

Just two months after the final, the Senegalese national team has seen its title revoked. Following the Confederation of African Football (CAF) decision to strip Senegal of its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations victory due to their early exit from the final against Morocco, the Senegalese Football Federation has lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The international tribunal has confirmed receipt of the appeal and pledged to expedite proceedings.

The dispute centers on the controversial final whistle in the Morocco-Senegal showdown. With the score level after extra time, a stoppage-time penalty awarded to Morocco was missed by Brahim Diaz. In protest, the Senegalese players walked off the pitch before briefly returning. Senegal argues that this act, while a response to perceived injustice, should not warrant the forfeiture of their hard-earned continental title.

Senegal seeks justice on the pitch

The Senegalese federation has formally requested the CAS to overturn the CAF ruling and reinstate their legitimate victory, which came courtesy of Pape Gueye’s extra-time strike. The appeal underscores their belief that the circumstances of the final do not justify the penalty of title reversal.

According to the CAS statement, a dedicated panel of arbitrators will be appointed to deliberate the case. While no hearing date has been set, the tribunal emphasizes its commitment to resolving the dispute promptly while ensuring all parties receive a fair hearing.

CAS affirms capability to resolve football disputes

Matthieu Reeb, Secretary General of the CAS, emphasized the tribunal’s readiness to handle such sports-related disputes with the highest standards of fairness and efficiency. “We are fully equipped to resolve this type of litigation,” he stated. “Our priority is to deliver a final decision as swiftly as possible, while upholding the rights of all involved to a transparent and equitable process.”

The CAS’s involvement ensures that the legal and sporting dimensions of the case are addressed with due diligence, offering both teams and fans a pathway to closure.

What’s next in the legal and sporting timeline?

  • Immediate: CAS begins procedural review and panel appointment.
  • Short-term: A hearing schedule will be established following arbitrator selection.
  • Long-term: Final ruling expected to resolve whether Morocco retains the CAN 2025 title or Senegal is reinstated.
