Morocco and Benin lead seventh Atlantic african states ministerial meeting in Cotonou

The seventh ministerial meeting of the African Atlantic States Process (AASP) opened this Monday in Cotonou, Benin, under the joint chairmanship of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Benin. This high-level gathering aims to deepen cooperation among African Atlantic coastal nations and advance regional integration, in line with His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision for an African Atlantic space characterized by shared peace, stability, and prosperity.

Strong delegations from both nations drive strategic discussions

The Moroccan delegation, led by Mohamed Methqal—Ambassador and Director General of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation (AMCI)—includes key figures such as Tarik Iziraren, Permanent Secretary of the AASP, and Rachid Rguibi, Morocco’s Ambassador to Benin. Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Communities Abroad are also part of the delegation, ensuring comprehensive representation.

A process built on progress and vision

Since its inception in Rabat in June 2022, the African Atlantic States Process has achieved significant milestones. These include the establishment of a permanent secretariat in Rabat, the formation of thematic working groups, and the adoption of an action plan centered on political dialogue, maritime security, blue economy development, connectivity, energy transition, and marine environmental protection. Previous meetings in Rabat, New York, and Praia have laid the groundwork for this week’s deliberations in Cotonou.

Cotonou meeting: a new chapter for regional collaboration

The Cotonou gathering represents another step forward in strengthening coordination among member states. The focus remains on fostering sustainable development, enhancing maritime governance, and promoting mutually beneficial co-development across the African Atlantic coastline. With shared challenges and opportunities at the forefront, this meeting is expected to yield concrete outcomes that will benefit the entire region.
