Morocco and BEI secure €365 million for transport network upgrades

Rabat recently witnessed the signing of two landmark agreements totaling €365 million, aimed at modernizing and securing Morocco’s critical rail and road networks. The financing package, formalized in the presence of top officials, underscores the strong partnership between Morocco, the European Investment Bank (BEI), and the European Union.

Major investments for rail and road resilience

The first agreement involves a €50 million loan from the BEI, complemented by a €15 million grant from the EU, dedicated to the rehabilitation of Morocco’s national railway system. The project, managed by the Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF), focuses on upgrading aging infrastructure to enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability across the network.

The second agreement centers on Morocco’s highway system, with the Autoroutes du Maroc (ADM) receiving a €300 million loan from the BEI. This funding will support the modernization of key motorways, reinforcing their structural integrity and resilience against climate-related challenges while improving connectivity nationwide.

Strengthening long-term partnerships

During the signing ceremony, Nadia Calviño, President of the BEI, highlighted Morocco’s strategic importance as a stable and prosperous partner in the region. She emphasized the bank’s ongoing commitment to supporting sustainable development and economic growth through targeted infrastructure investments.

Nadia Fettah, Morocco’s Minister of Economy and Finance, praised the enduring collaboration between the Kingdom, the EU, and the BEI. With over five decades of partnership and two decades of continuous BEI presence in Morocco, she noted that this latest funding reinforces a history of tangible results benefiting citizens and businesses alike.

The agreements reaffirm the shared vision of fostering a modern, resilient transport network that drives economic integration, enhances public safety, and aligns with broader climate action goals. These projects are expected to generate long-term benefits, including improved trade flows, reduced travel times, and a lower carbon footprint for Morocco’s transport sector.

For nearly half a century, the BEI has been a cornerstone of Morocco’s development, channeling billions in investments to support infrastructure, social cohesion, and environmental sustainability across the country.
