Mauritania seeks Gabon’s backing for OIF leadership bid

The Gabonese Republic and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania continue to strengthen their longstanding partnership, built on mutual respect and shared values. This commitment was further highlighted during an official meeting in Libreville, where President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema received Messouda Bahama Mohamed Laghdaf, a special envoy dispatched by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

The Mauritanian Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development carried a personal message from her country’s leader, reaffirming Mauritania’s eagerness to deepen bilateral cooperation with Gabon. Their discussions emphasized historical ties rooted in solidarity, continuous dialogue, and alignment on key continental issues.

During the engagement, the Mauritanian delegate formally presented her nation’s candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF). This bid, championed by Dr. Koumba Ba, outlines a vision centered on three guiding principles: coherence, balance, and direct utility to member states. The proposed strategy aims to strengthen Francophonie’s relevance and operational effectiveness across Africa and beyond.

The meeting underscored the robust and seamless diplomatic relations between Gabon and Mauritania. In response, President Oligui Nguema reaffirmed Gabon’s unwavering support for consensus-based governance and collaborative decision-making—core pillars of its continental diplomacy. This exchange reflects Gabon’s proactive foreign policy, which prioritizes diversifying African partnerships while advancing a purposeful, action-oriented Francophonie focused on collective development.
