Mali journalist jailed after criticizing military leadership

A prominent Malian journalist, Chahana Takiou, editor of the biweekly newspaper 22 septembre, was detained on Monday following a court summons, just days after he publicly condemned the ruling military junta at a Bamako media forum.

Detention under cybercrime charges

The journalist was taken into custody after being questioned by the prosecutor of the cybercrime unit in Bamako. Legal sources revealed that Takiou was placed under detention on charges of undermining state credibility through judicial institutions. His trial is scheduled for July 27.

Statements spark controversy

During the Pan-African Media Forum, held in Bamako from June 3 to 6, Takiou sharply criticized the military leadership. Addressing a panel moderated by Idrissa Hamidou Touré, prosecutor of a Bamako court, he declared, “There is no peacebuilding momentum in Mali. Instead of prosecuting journalists under press laws, authorities are applying cybercrime legislation.”

His remarks drew immediate attention, particularly after the forum, where he directly challenged the junta’s approach to governance and media freedom.

Press freedom groups condemn detention

The Mali Press House, along with several media professional organizations, issued a statement expressing shock and deep concern over Takiou’s imprisonment.

In their communiqué, they condemned the detention order, calling it a blatant violation of press freedom and freedom of expression. They argued that the move “damages the reputation of justice, the media, and the country as a whole.”

Family confirms detention

Relatives of the journalist confirmed his incarceration to local media, though no further details were disclosed. The case has reignited debates about media restrictions and judicial overreach in Mali’s current political climate.
