Mali strengthens higher education ties at global summit in China

Top educators and tech leaders converged in Shenzhen to redefine university-industry collaboration.

The world’s leading minds in education and technology gathered in Shenzhen last month to chart the future of higher learning. The Mali delegation, led by Dr. Mamadou Koumaré—Rector of the Bamako University of Social Sciences and Management and coordinator of the UNESCO-ICHEI partnership—played an active role in shaping the dialogue.

Representatives from universities, government agencies, international bodies, and tech enterprises engaged in two days of discussions focused on bridging the gap between academia and industry through AI-driven innovation. The summit’s core objective was to establish a dynamic ecosystem where educational institutions and technology sectors collaborate to develop future-ready talent.

Key outcomes included concrete proposals for upskilling programs centered on artificial intelligence applications across critical sectors such as agriculture, commerce, education, and natural sciences. Delegates also highlighted exemplary tech initiatives and reinforced the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) network by releasing a comprehensive report and fostering partnerships.

The event also catalyzed stronger ties between higher education stakeholders and tech innovators, emphasizing a shared approach to AI-powered talent development. Discussions underscored the need for curricular innovation, practical skill-building, and lifelong learning frameworks to meet evolving labor market demands.

Mali’s commitment to this vision was further demonstrated through partnership agreements signed by three Malian institutions—the Kurukanfuga University of Bamako, the Bamako University of Social Sciences and Management, and the University Institute of Pedagogy—with UNESCO-ICHEI. Dr. Koumaré oversees the IIOE hub that unites these universities, driving digital and AI integration in Malian higher education.

UNESCO has reaffirmed its dedication to supporting Mali’s higher education sector by enhancing human, technical, and technological capacities, ensuring the country remains at the forefront of educational transformation in Africa.
