Mali football team thanks its Belgian coach

The era of Tom Saintfiet, nicknamed “Uncle Tom,” has come to an end with the Mali national football team. The Malian Football Federation (Femafoot) has officially relieved the 53-year-old Belgian coach of his duties. His departure follows the team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and an early exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where Mali was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Senegal.

Femafoot expresses gratitude

Mahazou Cisset, the newly elected president of the Femafoot, took to social media to publicly acknowledge Saintfiet’s contributions. In an official statement, he praised the coach’s unwavering dedication, professionalism, and remarkable determination throughout his tenure. Cisset highlighted Saintfiet’s ability to foster team cohesion, implement structured training, and uphold the dignity of the Mali national team, the Aigles du Mali, in challenging circumstances.

“During your time with us, you consistently demonstrated commitment, exemplary professionalism, and remarkable determination in fulfilling your mission. Even in demanding conditions, you maintained team cohesion, structured technical work, and proudly represented the colors of the Aigles du Mali.”

The Femafoot has launched a call for applications to find a new head coach for the Mali national team. Candidates have until May 10 to submit their applications.
