Mali battles rage as 30 soldiers killed in anéfis clashes

The battle for the Mali’s northern territories has escalated with alarming intensity after fierce fighting erupted in Anéfis, a key strategic outpost roughly 100 kilometers south of Kidal. The clashes, which have drawn international attention, underscore the persistent challenges facing the country’s military leadership in securing its borders.

a devastating toll on both sides

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) suffered significant losses during the offensive, with General Jean Élysée Dao, Chief of Staff, confirming the deaths of 30 soldiers, described as “martyrs,” alongside 60 wounded, several in critical condition. The military leadership emphasized the gravity of the situation, framing the losses as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices required to defend national sovereignty.

On the opposing side, the coalition of armed groups—comprising separatist factions from the Azawad Liberation Front and Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorists (JNIM)—also faced heavy casualties. While the military claims to have inflicted substantial damage on enemy forces, the rebels acknowledged in a statement the loss of “some of their finest fighters,” though they refrained from providing exact numbers.

anéfis: a critical battleground

Anéfis remains a pivotal location in the ongoing conflict. For the Malian Armed Forces, bolstered by Russian support, securing this area is essential to disrupting rebel supply routes and safeguarding the critical corridor leading to Kidal. Military sources report that the fighting was exceptionally brutal, with Malian troops and Russian reinforcements temporarily holding out in a besieged military camp before a heavily armed convoy from Gao, backed by aerial support, shifted the momentum in their favor.

The rebel coalition, however, framed their withdrawal as a “strategic retreat” to minimize civilian casualties, though the true extent of their losses remains unclear.

the junta’s security promise under scrutiny

These deadly confrontations cast a stark light on the enduring security crisis gripping Mali since 2012. For the transitional military government in Bamako, the heavy losses serve as a critical test of their pledge to restore safety and territorial integrity across the nation. While the armed forces assert their commitment to reclaiming every inch of lost ground, the ferocity of the Anéfis battle reveals the resilience of armed factions in the North, prolonging a grueling war that continues to exact a devastating human cost.
