Ivory coast backs Morocco’s Sahara autonomy plan at un forum

During a high-level regional seminar organized by the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization (C24) in Managua, the Ivory Coast publicly restated its unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative aimed at resolving the decades-long Sahara dispute. This diplomatic endorsement, delivered by the Ivorian delegation, underscores the plan’s alignment with international law and key UN Security Council resolutions.

Why ivory coast backs the moroccan autonomy proposal

The Ivorian representatives highlighted three compelling arguments solidifying their position. First, they emphasized the initiative’s broad international recognition, with nearly 130 countries formally endorsing the framework. Second, they noted its compliance with both international law principles and the 2025 UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which explicitly endorses a political solution to the Sahara conflict. Finally, they pointed to the plan’s practical benefits for local populations in southern Morocco, including enhanced self-governance through regular democratic elections and meaningful representation in international forums.

Human rights and humanitarian concerns raised

While affirming their support, Ivorian diplomats also voiced serious concerns about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Tindouf camps, home to thousands displaced by the conflict. They called for urgent measures, including a comprehensive population census to ensure accurate aid distribution and prevent abuses. The delegation stressed that any lasting solution must prioritize human dignity, with full cooperation between regional authorities and relevant UN mechanisms.

calling for compromise and un-led negotiations

Abidjan made clear that the autonomy initiative represents the most viable path forward, urging all parties to abandon rigid positions and embrace pragmatic dialogue under the exclusive auspices of the United Nations. This stance reflects a broader West African consensus, with several regional states echoing similar positions in recent multilateral forums. The Ivorian intervention at the C24 seminar signals growing continental support for Morocco’s proposal as the foundation for a durable settlement of the Sahara question.
