How the Sénégal-Maroc CAN 2025 final inspired new FIFA disciplinary rules

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, football’s governing body is strengthening its regulatory framework to prevent extreme on-field protests.

Impact of the Sénégal-Maroc CAN 2025 final

This strategic shift follows the controversial events that took place during the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. On January 18, in Rabat, the Sénégal players walked off the pitch mid-match, leading to scenes of total confusion that resonated across the global football community.

In response, FIFA has pushed through new amendments via the International Football Association Board (IFAB). These regulations will be implemented starting with the 2026 World Cup, scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19 across the États-Unis, Canada, and Mexique.

New disciplinary measures for players and staff

One of the most significant changes involves the voluntary abandonment of the pitch. Any player who leaves the field to protest an official’s decision now risks an immediate red card. This sanction also applies to technical staff members who encourage such behavior.

Official guidelines state: “At the discretion of the organizer, the referee may expel any player leaving the field to contest a decision. This rule also applies to any official promoting such an attitude.”

Automatic forfeiture for match interruptions

Another major update dictates that any team responsible for the permanent termination of a match will be penalized with a loss by forfeit. This measure is specifically designed to stop teams from intentionally interrupting play to influence a result.

The context for these changes stems from the CAN 2025 final, where Sénégal coach Pape Thiaw ordered his players to exit the pitch. This occurred after a penalty was granted to Maroc and a goal by the Lions was disallowed, causing a chaotic hiatus before play eventually resumed.

By establishing these new protocols, FIFA aims to enforce a zero-tolerance policy against excessive dissent, ensuring the integrity and smooth operation of international tournaments moving forward.
