German envoy meets Douala archbishop to discuss papal visit and bilateral ties

Christian Sedat, Germany’s Ambassador to Cameroon, made a courtesy call to Archbishop Samuel Kleda of Douala on June 30, 2026. The meeting took place at the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral’s episcopal residence, where the two leaders discussed the recent papal visit to Cameroon and explored ways to deepen bilateral relations.
The ambassador was welcomed by the Archbishop and toured the episcopal residence before visiting the historic cathedral, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. A post on the German Embassy’s Facebook page highlighted the significance of the visit, emphasizing the strong ties between Germany, Cameroon, and the Catholic Church.
The statement read, “During a visit to Douala, Ambassador Christian Sedat met with His Excellency Archbishop Samuel Kleda for an open and enriching exchange on the role of religious actors in society, particularly in light of the historic papal visit. This meeting also underscores the strong ties uniting Germany, Cameroon, and the Catholic Church. Germany remains present on the ground, listening and engaging in dialogue across the country.”
Germany’s growing engagement in Cameroon
Christian Sedat has served as Germany’s Ambassador to Cameroon since July 2025, bringing extensive diplomatic experience from his previous roles. Prior to his current position, he served as Germany’s Ambassador to Juba, South Sudan (2023–2025), and held diplomatic posts in Washington D.C. and London (2009–2013). Earlier in his career, he was Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Nouakchott, Mauritania (2005–2008).
Since assuming his role in Yaoundé, Sedat has been actively advancing key areas of German-Cameroonian cooperation. His work focuses on strengthening economic relations, development cooperation, and cultural dialogue—including sensitive issues tied to colonial-era cultural and heritage assets. He has also prioritized supporting grassroots social projects, such as public health micro-initiatives, to improve local communities.
