Gabon rethinks overseas scholarships for students

President Brice Oligui Nguema of Gabon has announced a significant overhaul of the criteria for awarding public scholarships to students intending to pursue their studies in certain European nations. This strategic shift is primarily driven by the escalating tuition fees and a noticeable reduction in financial aid provisions for students abroad.

This pivotal policy adjustment was revealed on August 17, 2026, during a national address delivered on the eve of Gabon’s 66th independence anniversary celebrations. While the Head of State did not explicitly name the European countries affected, France is anticipated to be particularly impacted, given the substantial number of Gabonese students who traditionally receive scholarships to study there.

Concurrently, President Nguema has urged Gabonese youth to increasingly consider the leading universities and training institutions across the African continent. He articulated his belief that Africa now presents considerable opportunities for higher education, innovation, and professional development.

For the Gabonese president, this reorientation addresses the critical need to better manage expenditures associated with international studies, while simultaneously enhancing the nation’s own educational and training capabilities. He also advocated for curricula that are more closely aligned with Gabon’s economic priorities and its specific skill requirements.

The authorities are therefore focused on fostering an educational policy that better supports the country’s development aspirations, especially as the costs of overseas higher education continue their upward trajectory.

Gabon commemorated its independence on August 17 in Libreville with various official events, including a military parade attended by Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi and General Horta Ntam, representing Guinea-Bissau.
