Gabon ends eu fishing deal to boost local industry

DIG / Gabon has opted not to renew its fisheries partnership agreement with the European Union, which was set to expire on June 28, 2026.

This decisive move reflects the nation’s commitment to reclaim control over its marine resources and channel greater economic benefits back into the country.

Was Gabon shortchanged?

Central to Libreville’s concerns were the meager returns from the deal, amounting to roughly €2.6 million annually (about 1.7 billion CFA francs), widely regarded as inadequate given the volume of catches in Gabonese waters.

The government now plans to prioritize local tuna processing, aiming to stimulate job creation, attract industrial investment, and enhance the nation’s value-added production.

Seeking a fairer partnership

This shift aligns with Gabon’s broader strategy for economic sovereignty and the expansion of its blue economy.

While formal negotiations with the EU are not yet fully finalized, Gabon’s stance is unequivocal: it seeks a more balanced and mutually beneficial agreement.
