Gabon Cracks Down on Child Labor Ring in Libreville

Despite clear legislation, child labor persists in Gabon, prompting the government to take decisive action.

The mission, involving the Ministry of Justice, security forces, and social affairs, targeted commercial zones and markets in Libreville. This nationwide initiative aims to track down exploitation rings and restore children’s right to education.

Child Labor as a Form of Economic Necessity

‘We need to be firm,’ said Gladys Victoire Maganga, Director of Social Affairs and Youth Protection. ‘Child labor is not an economic necessity; it’s a crime punishable by law.’ On the ground, this phenomenon takes many forms, including forced labor, domestic work, and human trafficking.

Young people’s testimonies highlight the complexity of their situation. Some work informally to support their families or pay for school supplies. However, this involvement comes with severe physical and psychological consequences, compromising their education.

Dismantling Child Trafficking Networks

‘This operation will not just involve sporadic checks.’ The nationwide effort aims to create a detailed map of child exploitation networks and mechanisms. The goal is twofold: identify those behind these activities and bring them to justice, as well as provide comprehensive state support for children rescued from these circuits.
