Gabon is taking significant steps toward sustainable ocean governance through nationwide public consultations on its National Marine Zoning Plan. Government representatives from the Ministry of the Blue Economy have been traveling across coastal communities to present this strategic initiative, which reflects the country’s commitment to balancing ecological preservation with economic development.
These discussions focus on clarifying the government’s long-term vision for marine resource management, including the current status of protected marine areas. In Port-Gentil, for instance, local stakeholders in the artisanal fishing sector gathered to review the proposed zoning plan for their waters. This initiative aligns with the Blue Obligations project, positioning Gabon as a global leader in innovative funding for marine ecosystem conservation.
The consultations aim to establish a collaborative framework for defining protected marine zones. Once finalized, the zoning proposal will undergo review by national decision-making bodies for official endorsement.
This technical effort underscores Gabon’s dedication to safeguarding vital marine habitats—such as mangroves—while ensuring fair access to resources for artisanal fishermen, women fishmongers, and seafood processors. The initiative prioritizes both present needs and future generations’ rights to sustainable livelihoods.
The Ministry of the Blue Economy has set a deadline of July 19 to complete its assessment. During this period, experts will map traditional fishing zones, migratory routes, and climate-resilient areas within the Estuaire, Nyanga, and Ogooué-Maritime provinces.
