The Camp de Gaulle is no longer a French military base. These words, delivered by Fabrice Mauriès, France’s Ambassador to Gabon, during his address at the French National Day celebrations in Libreville on July 14, marked a turning point in the evolving defense partnership between the two nations. The diplomat confirmed that the site’s transformation is nearing completion, signaling a new chapter in Franco-Gabonese military cooperation.
Addressing the ongoing adjustments in defense relations, Mauriès emphasized that Gabon and France are in the final phase of a jointly developed process aimed at modernizing their defense ties. This strategic shift aligns with both countries’ shared vision of strengthening security collaboration in the region.

The Ambassador highlighted the enduring strength of the two nations’ political, security, and military cooperation, describing it as a cornerstone of their relationship built on deep camaraderie. He noted that the Inter-Armed Liaison Detachment in Gabon (DLI-G) now oversees operational cooperation, while regional training schools continue their educational missions.
Mauriès went on to reveal a significant shift in France’s military footprint in Gabon. “In the coming weeks, this partnership will reach a clear and stable balance, with Camp de Gaulle already transitioning from a French base to a redefined facility that will soon complete its transformation under a new designation,” he stated.
Beyond military cooperation, the Ambassador underscored progress in broader security initiatives. “We are working closely with Gabon’s Justice Minister to establish a National Financial Prosecutor’s Office,” he said. He also pointed to key priorities such as combating drug trafficking, irregular migration, border surveillance, and strengthening the capabilities of Gabon’s police, gendarmerie, firefighters, and penitentiary administration.
Since the regime change in August 2023, France and Gabon have been recalibrating their military cooperation. This adjustment led to the transformation of the French Elements in Gabon (EFG) into the Inter-Armed Liaison Detachment in Gabon (DLI-G), refocusing efforts on training, advisory roles, and operational cooperation.
The definitive transformation of Camp de Gaulle represents another milestone in this reorganization, reaffirming both nations’ commitment to a strategic partnership tailored to the evolving security priorities of Central Africa.
