Who is Jean-Pierre Bekolo?

The Cameroonian filmmaker and public intellectual has built his reputation on bold critiques of power structures through his cinematic works. His latest statement marks a departure from artistic commentary into direct political analysis.

Cameroon’s political landscape without President Biya

In his recent commentary, Bekolo paints a stark picture of a nation drifting toward instability. He argues that the symbolic authority that has held Cameroon together for decades is inextricably linked to President Biya’s presence, regardless of his physical condition or age.

«Cameroon has entered a period of permanent contestation, currently playing out through media, social networks, and influence battles. The clans that are already clashing will soon escalate to the next level», he warns.

Bekolo contends that without Biya’s unifying figure, the competing factions that have been kept in check by his authority will no longer respect any institution or leader. The current power struggles, though contained for now, could erupt into more serious conflicts, including potential assassinations.

Institutional erosion and public distrust

The filmmaker highlights alarming signs of systemic decay:

  • Ministerial invisibility: Government departments appear powerless to address citizens’ daily challenges while their leaders maintain lavish privileges
  • Constitutional challenges: The Constitutional Council’s credibility has been severely undermined by decisions perceived as politically motivated
  • Resource mismanagement: Revelations about state gold reserves being diverted raise questions about national sovereignty
  • Extended mandates: Top officials cling to positions far beyond their intended terms without accountability
  • Shadow governance: The line between presidential decisions and those of his inner circle has become dangerously blurred

«Every decision, appointment, and succession is now questioned. This isn’t chaos imported from opposition forces or foreign actors – it stems from a system that has exhausted its ability to function without President Biya», Bekolo asserts.

A call for responsible departure

The filmmaker proposes a radical solution: those who have served their time should step aside to make way for a transitional government. This body would be tasked with:

  • Rebuilding institutional trust
  • Establishing new rules of governance
  • Organizing credible elections
  • Preventing the nation’s collapse

Bekolo warns that any attempts to prolong the current system through backroom deals or constitutional manipulations will only accelerate the descent into chaos that everyone seeks to avoid.

«Those responsible for these maneuvers will answer to history for accelerating the very outcome they claim to prevent», he concludes.
