Two men killed near ORTM in Bamako
In Mali, two young men lost their lives near the ORTM, the Malian public radio and television broadcasting headquarters, on Thursday morning. The deadly incident unfolded at dawn, around 5:30 AM, in this highly secure zone of Bamako, which also hosts a prominent hotel in the capital.
Military authorities reported that two individuals on a motorbike allegedly attempted to force their way through the security barriers encircling the ORTM premises. However, some local accounts suggest the men were seasonal workers heading to their job site.
In Bamako, reactions vary regarding the military’s use of lethal force, especially as residents of the capital increasingly navigate life with numerous security checkpoints. This incident has become a significant topic in Mali current affairs and Bamako news.
Enhanced surveillance on roads
These checkpoints were established near the Office de radiodiffusion télévision du Mali on April 25, following intense combat between the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) and fighters from JNIM (Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims). JNIM had launched simultaneous attacks across seven locations in the country, including the capital, Bamako, drawing significant attention in West Africa Mali news.
According to the Army General Staff, the two young men disregarded warning shots fired by the two stationed agents after allegedly breaching the initial checkpoint. Further warning shots were then reportedly discharged before the two individuals were fatally shot, as confirmed by military authorities.
A driver, who wished to remain anonymous, commented that the two young men should have been aware of the inherent dangers. “Everyone knows that during this period of uncertainty, no one should pass through this area without authorization, as access is restricted. When there are alerts, one must know to stop to avoid trouble. I believe the agents on duty that day were fully within their rights to act.”
“The full truth may never be known”
Seyba, another Bamako resident, held a differing opinion. He suggested that measures could have been taken to preserve the lives of the individuals, allowing for their interrogation. “I think the security forces should have aimed for the motorbike, or tried to hit their legs to injure them, so they could be questioned. Now that both are dead, it will be difficult for us to ascertain their true intentions. Even if they were suspected terrorists, we may never know what truly transpired.”
Based on testimonies gathered on site, the two young men were seasonal workers en route to a temporary construction job. They reportedly acted out of unawareness of the prevailing security regulations.
Security around the ORTM sector has since been significantly reinforced, reflecting growing concerns in Mali politics English discussions.
Similar security enhancements have been implemented at military camps throughout the capital, as well as at Bamako Senou International Airport, which is now under heightened surveillance. Access to the airport is strictly limited to travelers and airport personnel.
