More than 300 individuals have tragically lost their lives due to actions by ADF rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the beginning of the year. These grim figures, compiled by a United Nations office, detail executions occurring across the Ituri and Nord-Kivu provinces. The UN body strongly condemned a recent assault specifically targeting Ngadi, a village situated near Beni in Nord-Kivu, which took place during the night of May 30-31.
Following this particular incident, the Congolese government confirmed on Monday that 15 civilians and one soldier were among the fatalities.
The Beni region has endured a series of brutal incursions by the ADF insurgents, resulting in over 40 civilian deaths within a mere three-day period, highlighting the persistent threat to local communities.
For decades, since the mid-1990s, the ADF rebels have maintained a stronghold in eastern DRC, where their presence has led to the deaths of thousands of non-combatants. In a significant development in 2019, the group pledged allegiance to the Islamic State terrorist organization. The Islamic State now recognizes the ADF as its “Central Africa Province” and has claimed responsibility for several of their attacks, further complicating the security landscape in the region.
