ECOWAS and un women endorse regional gender and green economy initiative in Abidjan

Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire – A significant regional program focused on gender, climate change, and the green economy has received validation in Abidjan. This integrated initiative was endorsed by the ECOWAS Centre for Gender Development (CCDG) in collaboration with UN Women and various specialized ECOWAS agencies.

The validation meeting, which took place on May 15 and 16 at the ECOWAS Resident Representation in Côte d’Ivoire, aimed to finalize the strategic document for the program. Participants also worked to establish a clear roadmap for its successful implementation across the region.

This comprehensive program is designed to enhance regional efforts in addressing member states’ priorities concerning gender equality, climate resilience, and the ongoing ecological transition. Furthermore, it seeks to bolster financial support for the existing ECOWAS Action Plan on Gender and Climate Change.

Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, Director of the CCDG, emphasized that the ecological transition presents both formidable challenges and significant opportunities for women and young girls throughout West Africa.

Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, the Resident Representative for UN Women in Côte d’Ivoire, highlighted the program’s importance, stating that it signifies a crucial shift from mere political discourse to concrete action in tackling the region’s pressing climatic and economic issues.

Dr. Kalilou Sylla, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, underscored the vital need for an inclusive green transition that genuinely empowers women and youth by providing them with tangible opportunities.

The definitive version of the program document is slated for official adoption during a dedicated working session scheduled to be held from June 29 to July 6, 2026, in Lomé, Togo.
