Deadly Ebola Virus Spreads Across Democratic Republic of Congo
The Democratic Republic of Congo is dealing with a severe outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus. Since its official declaration on May 15th, over 1,500 cases have been confirmed and more than 500 deaths reported.
This is the deadliest Ebola epidemic in Africa’s history, having claimed over 15,000 lives since 1970.
High Mortality Rate
The outbreak has reached its peak in the Ituri region, where the actual scale of the crisis remains unclear and could last several months.
In Mongbwalu, a mining town considered the epicenter of the outbreak, a high mortality rate (50.7%) indicates persistent challenges in early intervention or access to medical care for patients.
The virus has also been detected in neighboring provinces, including Nord-Kivu and Sud-Kivu, where provincial capitals and large areas are controlled by the M23 rebel group.
In Nord-Kivu, a mortality rate of 57.4% is considered ‘highly alarming’ by Congolese health authorities.
The DRC government has taken steps to contain the outbreak despite reports from local authorities claiming it had been eradicated in areas controlled by M23.
