Ebola surge in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo claims 91 lives
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is grappling with a severe Ebola virus disease outbreak in its eastern provinces, with the latest official figures showing 515 confirmed cases and 91 deaths as of June 7, 2026. Health authorities report a fatality rate of 17.7% across the affected regions.
The disease, caused by the Bundibugyo ebolavirus strain, has spread across 25 health zones in three provinces, with Ituri remaining the hardest-hit area. The outbreak shows no signs of abating, with 27 new cases reported in the past 24 hours alone.
Ituri remains the epicenter of the crisis
Health officials confirm that Ituri Province continues to bear the brunt of the epidemic, with 17 of its 36 health zones affected. Key areas include:
- Aru, Bambu, Bunia
- Mambasa – site of recent violent attacks by armed groups
- Mongbwalu – where a local civil society leader recently passed away from the virus
- Nizi, Nyankunde, Rimba and Rwampara
The North Kivu and South Kivu provinces also report active transmission, with the Katwa health zone in North Kivu showing particularly high numbers (11 confirmed cases, 8 deaths). Other affected areas include:
- Beni: 5 cases, 3 deaths
- Butembo: 4 cases, 2 deaths
- Miti-Murhesa: 3 cases, 1 death
- Oicha, Kalunguta and others
Healthcare response faces multiple challenges
The ongoing battle against the virus is hampered by several critical factors:
- Persistent insecurity in parts of Ituri Province, hampering access to affected communities
- Logistical difficulties in reaching remote areas
- Community resistance fueled by misinformation and rumors
Health authorities are urging immediate reporting of suspected cases and strict adherence to prevention measures. Currently, 283 patients are under isolation or hospitalization, while 12 recoveries have been recorded since the outbreak began.
The situation remains fluid, with health experts warning that without enhanced community engagement and international support, the outbreak could continue to expand beyond its current geographic footprint.
Critical health zones in North Kivu
The outbreak’s spread into North Kivu’s major urban centers raises particular concerns:
- Goma – 1 confirmed case, no deaths reported
- Beni – ongoing transmission
- Butembo – commercial hub with active cases
Health officials emphasize that the combination of urban transmission and rural spread creates a complex epidemiological landscape requiring urgent, coordinated intervention.
