DNCG imposes salary and transfer cap on Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais

The French football authorities have made their decision. The Direction nationale du contrôle de gestion (DNCG) has unveiled strict financial regulations that Olympique de Marseille (OM) and Olympique Lyonnais (OL) must comply with during the upcoming 2026-2027 Ligue 1 season.

Financial restrictions for the Phocéens

Olympique de Marseille faces significant constraints, with the DNCG imposing a capping of the wage bill alongside restrictions on transfer indemnities. This decision follows a thorough review of the club’s financial stability, which has been under scrutiny for months due to a challenging 2025-2026 campaign.

Notably, this is not the first time OM has faced such measures. The club previously underwent wage bill restrictions in both 2021 and 2023, highlighting persistent financial pressures.

Olympique Lyonnais also under financial watch

Olympique Lyonnais is not exempt from these financial oversight measures. The DNCG has mandated a wage bill cap tied to the club’s budget following its ownership change. This announcement aligns with the findings of the Commission de contrôle des clubs professionnels, which evaluated all clubs’ financial health for the next season.

Despite these restrictions, Olympique Lyonnais has secured its Ligue 1 status for the coming year. Additionally, the club’s new majority shareholder, Michele Kang, was confirmed during a press briefing.

Recent sanctions for Olympique de Marseille

The timing of these restrictions is particularly noteworthy, as Olympique de Marseille was hit with a €10 million fine from UEFA less than two weeks prior for breaches of financial fair play regulations. The club’s financial fragility has been a recurring concern for football’s governing bodies.

The DNCG had earlier requested additional financial documentation from OM, reflecting the depth of the club’s financial struggles. With these new constraints, Olympique de Marseille must demonstrate significant fiscal responsibility to avoid further penalties.
