Dakar’s political tensions: diomaye faye and ousmane sonko’s uneasy cohabitation

After only two years in office, the Diomaye Faye-Ousmane Sonko tandem has collapsed. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has removed Sonko from the Prime Minister’s post, leaving the former head of government as the newly elected President of the National Assembly. That leadership role comes with another crown: Sonko has been overwhelmingly re-elected to lead the Pastef party, which holds a parliamentary majority yet remains excluded from the government. How did this political rift unfold? Will the president and his former ally manage to coexist in power? Most pressing of all, could these growing tensions push the needs of ordinary Senegalese citizens further down the priority list?

Key voices in the debate

  • Abdoulaye Tine — Minister-Counsellor and Spokesman for the Presidency of the Republic
  • Amadou Ba — Former Minister of Culture, Member of Parliament, and National Secretary in charge of Communications for the Pastef
  • Babacar Ndiaye — Political analyst and Research Director at the Wathi think tank

What led to the rupture?

The break between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko was not sudden. Months of policy disagreements, strategic divergences, and institutional clashes had already surfaced. Sonko’s uncompromising stance on transparency, his insistence on grassroots priorities, and his willingness to challenge the executive clashed repeatedly with the president’s own vision for governance. These tensions peaked when Sonko was abruptly relieved of his duties as Prime Minister in early June 2026, a move widely seen as the definitive end of their collaboration.

What lies ahead for Senegal’s political landscape?

With Sonko now presiding over the National Assembly and leading the majority party, the power dynamic has shifted dramatically. The Pastef, though absent from the cabinet, commands a clear parliamentary majority, giving it unparalleled influence over legislation. Yet the absence of direct ministerial participation raises questions about cohesion and governance effectiveness.

Can Diomaye Faye’s administration govern effectively while Sonko’s party holds the legislative reins? Will the two leaders find a way to rebuild trust and align their priorities? Or will the standoff deepen, risking paralysis and delaying urgent reforms that Senegalese citizens desperately need?
