Dakar court examines complaint against Ousmane Sonko over touba remarks

A collective representing descendants of Serigne Touba has formally filed a complaint against Ousmane Sonko before the Dakar high court, accusing him of damaging the reputation of the holy city of Touba. The legal action, registered as case number 12562, follows remarks attributed to the opposition leader during the inauguration of his party’s new headquarters last weekend, where he allegedly claimed that “dirty money” had entered the sacred city.

Allegations of defamation and harm to Touba’s standing

Through spokesmen Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso, the collective argues that Sonko’s statements undermine the moral and spiritual integrity of Touba—a city founded on principles of faith, integrity, work, and justice. They emphasize that the allegations cast unwarranted suspicion over the entire community, tarnishing its dignity and historical legacy.

The complainants have urged the prosecutor’s office to launch a thorough investigation to verify the accuracy of Sonko’s claims and assess their legal implications. Their demands include summoning the politician for clarification and requesting any evidence supporting his statements.

Legal consequences sought

Beyond seeking accountability for reputational harm, the collective is pushing for potential charges under Senegalese law, including defamation, spreading false information, or other applicable offenses. Their goal is to ensure that justice is served while protecting the sanctity and honor of Touba and its residents.
