In a robust statement issued from Paris, the Embassy of Côte d’Ivoire to the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco officially voiced its profound disapproval. This strong diplomatic protest follows remarks made by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the La France insoumise party, during a political rally in France. The embassy asserts that Mélenchon’s comments undermine Ivorian institutions, insult the Ivorian people, and disrespect President Alassane Ouattara.
The diplomatic communiqué, bearing the signature of Ambassador Maurice Kouakou Bandaman, detailed Mélenchon’s assertions regarding Côte d’Ivoire’s political landscape. He specifically accused the head of state of marginalizing political opponents during the most recent presidential election and of securing a fourth term, which Mélenchon controversially labeled as “unconstitutional”.
The embassy characterized these pronouncements as “irresponsible, irreverent, insulting, and degrading.” It firmly stated that the French politician possesses “no legitimacy, qualification, or competence” to pass judgment on the Ivorian institutions responsible for organizing and validating the nation’s electoral processes.
Furthermore, the diplomatic mission underscored Côte d’Ivoire’s status as a sovereign nation since its independence on August 7, 1960. It emphasized that no foreign political figure has the right to make statements deemed offensive towards the country.
The declaration also highlighted the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between Côte d’Ivoire and France. These relations, it noted, are built on mutual respect and have been strengthened through the presidencies of both Félix Houphouët-Boigny and Alassane Ouattara. The embassy suggested that any political leader aspiring to France’s highest office should carefully consider the vital interests of the bilateral relationship.
Concluding its statement, the Embassy of Côte d’Ivoire to the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco declared its intention to initiate “all legal actions.” This measure aims to ensure that Mélenchon’s remarks, viewed as an offense to the Ivorian people and their President, are addressed by the appropriate legal authorities.
The official declaration, dated July 16, 2026, was formally signed by Maurice Kouakou Bandaman, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary representing Côte d’Ivoire in France and Monaco.
