Côte d’Ivoire: Disciplinary sanctions hit 61 PPA-CI members ahead of congress
Abidjan — Tensions are rising within the Parti des peuples africains – Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI) as the party prepares for its first ordinary congress on May 14-15, 2026. In an official statement released on May 13, the party leadership, led by Laurent Gbagbo, announced disciplinary measures against 61 cadres and activists deemed ‘undisciplined’.
The sanctions, outlined in a communiqué signed by the party’s Secretary-General Tchéidé Jean Gervais, were approved by the Strategic and Political Council (CSP) under decision CSP n°02-2026/CSP/PPA-CI/KKJ/07052026 and validated by the party presidency on May 13. The leadership emphasized the need to uphold internal discipline and ensure smooth preparations for the upcoming congress.
The sanctions are divided into three categories. The first group, the largest, includes 44 cadres suspended for 18 months. The second group comprises 10 cadres suspended for 12 months, while the third group consists of 7 cadres suspended for 6 months. During their suspensions, the affected members are barred from participating in party activities and excluded from internal elections.
This decisive action comes at a politically sensitive time, as the PPA-CI faces a critical organizational milestone. Observers suggest the move reflects the leadership’s determination to consolidate authority and align the party around its official line. However, the scale of the suspensions has sparked internal debates, with some analysts interpreting it as a sign of growing tensions and strategic disagreements within the party.
As of now, no official reactions have emerged from the sanctioned members. Yet, the sweeping nature of these measures could significantly influence the party’s internal dynamics and shape the discussions at the upcoming congress, which is poised to be a pivotal moment for the PPA-CI’s future.
