Senegal. Former president Macky Sall’s return sparks outrage in Dakar
Controversy erupts as ex-president Macky Sall prepares to return to Dakar on Friday, July 17, for a meeting with current head of state Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The visit comes amid simmering tensions over the violent crackdown on protests between 2021 and 2024.
A collective representing victims’ families condemned the visit as “an affront to justice”. Boubacar Sèye, spokesperson for the group, stated, “This is not a time for reconciliation, but for accountability. We demand answers for the dozens of lives lost during those years of repression.”
The former president’s return follows his departure from power in April 2024, marking the first time he sets foot in Senegal since leaving office.
Political divisions deepen
While some view the meeting as a routine diplomatic exchange, others see it as a betrayal of the victims. Opposition figures have been vocal in their criticism. “Inviting Macky Sall is an insult to every family who lost loved ones,” declared Guy Marius Sagna, a lawmaker from the ruling coalition.
On the other side, supporters of the former president are gearing up for a massive welcome. The Alliance for the Republic (APR), his political party, has called on members to organize rallies in Dakar on Thursday and Friday. In a social media post, Macky Sall confirmed he would depart “immediately” after the meeting with President Faye.
International ambitions overshadow domestic tensions
Timing of the visit is particularly sensitive, coinciding with Macky Sall’s bid for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. His candidacy, backed by Burundi (current chair of the African Union), has drawn criticism, especially as it was not officially endorsed by Senegal.
Government officials have remained tight-lipped on the matter. The Minister of Armed Forces, Yankhoba Diémé, dismissed concerns, stating that the visit was “a normal and ordinary occurrence” for a former head of state. “He faces no accusations, no charges, and no convictions,” the minister added.
