clashes erupt in Paris after psg wins champions league

A historic night for Paris Saint-Germain turned tumultuous as celebrations following their Champions League victory spiraled into violence and destruction across the French capital and other cities.

The final whistle in Istanbul signaled the end of a thrilling match against Arsenal, with PSG triumphing 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Yet, the jubilation among supporters quickly gave way to chaos, with fires, clashes with police, and widespread vandalism reported in Paris and beyond.

security forces overwhelmed despite massive deployment

In anticipation of the celebrations, authorities had mobilized an unprecedented security force of 22,000 police and gendarmes, including 8,000 dedicated to maintaining order in Paris and its surrounding areas. Despite this massive effort, 219 people were injured, eight of them critically. Among the wounded, 57 law enforcement officers were also hurt, including one in a severe incident in Agen.

The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed that 780 individuals were detained nationwide—a 32% increase compared to the same night in 2025, when PSG last won the tournament. Cities like Grenoble, Dijon, and Besançon witnessed similar scenes of disorder, with damage to property and public infrastructure.

deadly accident and violent assaults mar the night

Tragedy struck shortly after 1:00 AM near Porte Maillot, where a motorcyclist lost control and collided with concrete blocks placed on an exit ramp of the outer ring road. The barriers, which were clearly marked, caused a fatal collision. The victim, a man born in 2002, was pronounced dead at 2:20 AM, and authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances.

In a separate incident around 4:00 AM in the 16th arrondissement, four individuals armed with knives attacked a young man, leaving him with life-threatening injuries. The victim, believed to be 17 years old, was rushed to a Parisian hospital in a coma after suffering severe wounds to his eye and mouth. His attackers fled the scene.

champ de mars set to host massive victory celebration

Despite the unrest, plans for a grand public gathering on Champ de Mars on Sunday afternoon remain unchanged. Nearly 100,000 fans are expected to line the iconic esplanade to honor the PSG players and coaching staff, who will later visit the Élysée Palace and the Parc des Princes.

Earlier, around 150 individuals attempted to force their way into the Parc des Princes stadium but were quickly dispersed by riot police. The situation, though tense, highlights the deep emotional investment of PSG supporters, whose passion for the club often transcends the boundaries of celebration.

looking ahead: a city divided between pride and consequence

As the sun rose on Sunday, the city of Paris faced the aftermath of a night that began with triumph and ended in chaos. While PSG’s victory marks a monumental achievement in French football, the violent disturbances have cast a shadow over the celebrations, prompting renewed discussions on managing public gatherings and ensuring safety during major sporting events.
