The capital of Chad, N’Djamena, has just seen the dismantling of a clandestine slaughter network operating in the Machaga district. Joint efforts by the Ministry of Livestock, Sanitary Police Coordination, and security forces uncovered over 100 infected cattle and 40 sick sheep. These animals, purchased by an unidentified international NGO with the involvement of a few local accomplices, were intended for distribution as gifts to the public during the Tabaski celebrations.
Government takes decisive action to protect public health
The discovery prompted an immediate response from the Ministry of Livestock and Animal Production. On May 28, Dr. Ousmane Yosko Souhoumi, the ministry’s Secretary-General, personally inspected the site. His findings confirmed the severity of the situation, leading to urgent measures to mitigate risks to public health.
Immediate measures and long-term safeguards
The Secretary-General ordered the incineration of all deceased animals to prevent any spread of disease. Survivors were placed under the care of veterinary services for treatment and recovery. Additionally, he emphasized the need for heightened vigilance to ensure the safety of Chad’s food supply and prevent future incidents of this nature.
