Chad’s vice premier minister assesses local governance in Moundou

Chad’s vice prime minister in charge of territorial administration, Limane Mahamat, has been on a monitoring and evaluation mission in Moundou since May 19, 2026. The visit focuses on assessing regional governance structures and their effectiveness in addressing local needs.

High-level discussions in Logone Occidental

The two-day gathering, held May 20-21 at the Logone Occidental provincial council headquarters, brought together key administrative figures from southern Chad. Attendees included government delegates, prefects, municipal mayors, provincial council presidents, and national legislators.

Local realities take center stage

Dago Yacoub, the government delegate for Logone Occidental, welcomed the delegation from N’Djamena at the opening session. He emphasized that this engagement would help central authorities gain deeper insights into the region’s pressing issues and immediate needs. “This mission allows decision-makers to experience firsthand the challenges faced by our communities,” he stated, underscoring the importance of ground-level perspectives in shaping responsive policies.

Southern Chad’s strategic importance

Vice Prime Minister Limane Mahamat highlighted the critical role of southern provinces in the national economy, describing the region as the “country’s agricultural heartland” due to its vital contribution to food security. However, he also pointed to persistent security challenges threatening stability in the area, including farmer-herder conflicts, intercommunal tensions, and the proliferation of illegal firearms. These issues, he noted, undermine social cohesion and deepen divisions among communities.

The government’s initiative aims to strengthen local governance frameworks and enhance collaboration between central authorities and regional administrations to address these pressing concerns.
