Chad’s supreme court upholds 20-year sentence for opposition leader Succès Masra

Tchad

In Chad, the 20-year criminal conviction of prominent opposition figure Succès Masra has been definitively upheld.

The Supreme Court on Thursday affirmed the sentence initially handed down on August 9, 2025, dismissing the appeal filed by the former head of government.

The leader of the Les Transformateurs party, along with over 70 co-accused, stands convicted of serious offenses including «disseminating messages of a racist and xenophobic nature», «criminal conspiracy», and «complicity in murder», all linked to the tragic Mandakao massacre.

The defense team, spearheaded by attorney Kadjilembaye Francis, ultimately failed to sway the Supreme Court judges with their arguments.

This irreversible ruling concludes the domestic judicial proceedings against one of Chad’s most significant political personalities. Barring a presidential pardon, Succès Masra is now mandated to serve the entirety of his pronounced sentence.

Officials from the Les Transformateurs party promptly responded, condemning the verdict as a disgraceful decision.

According to legal experts, Succès Masra’s remaining avenues for appeal are confined to presenting his case before sub-regional or international judicial bodies.
