Chad: general Abdoulaye Miskine’s long-awaited trial remains stalled

Tchad : l’affaire du général Abdoulaye Miskine déprogrammée, le procès toujours bloqué

The judicial proceedings concerning General Abdoulaye Miskine, whose real name is Martin Koumtamadji, have once again hit an impasse. His case, which was listed on the general docket for the criminal chamber’s special session on Monday, May 25, 2026, at the N’Djamena Court of Appeal, has been unexpectedly removed from the schedule. This postponement comes after years of detention without a trial, making the public and his legal team highly anticipate the hearing.

Court records indicate the file was registered under reference number 093/2022. Abdoulaye Miskine stood accused alongside several other individuals, including Adoum Rakhis, Ringo Djouma, and Abdoulaye Gros. The charges are grave, encompassing criminal association, establishing and participating in insurrectional movements, kidnapping, illegal detention, severe abuse, rape, and property extortion. The alleged location of these offenses is Tissi.

Arrested in November 2019 in N’Djamena, General Miskine has now been held for over six and a half years at Klessoum detention center without facing judgment. The last scheduled hearing on May 25, 2026, was reportedly suspended. While the sudden death of a court clerk was cited as a reason, no new date has been communicated since, deepening the mystery surrounding this already sensitive case.

The case has been removed from the judicial calendar “until further notice.” There are strong indications of political pressures influencing the proceedings, hindering the trial of the former leader of the Front démocratique du peuple centrafricain (FDPC). This alleged interference persists despite the prolonged detention and repeated appeals from his lawyers and family for a swift resolution.

The Central African Republic had previously sought his extradition, but Chad has consistently declined to hand him over to Bangui authorities. His involvement in the Khartoum Peace Accord in 2019 further underscores the complex political and regional dimensions intertwined with this legal matter.

Concerns for his health have also been growing. For several years, those close to him have raised alarms about his deteriorating condition, citing renal insufficiency, high blood pressure, vision problems, and significant weight loss. He has been hospitalized on multiple occasions, notably in 2025, a year during which he also initiated a hunger strike following the confiscation of his medication.

Supporters view this situation as a clear example of prolonged detention without due process. While judicial authorities maintain that the case is officially pending, the sudden postponement of the May 25, 2026, hearing reignites criticism regarding the persistent deadlock. This situation highlights the intricate intersection of judicial, security, and political stakes between Chad and the Central African Republic.

As of now, no new date for the resumption of the trial has been announced. The Abdoulaye Miskine case thus remains in limbo, with no clear path towards judgment, release, or extradition in sight.
