The Caritas network across the Sahel is joining forces to address the deepening humanitarian and sociopolitical crises unfolding in Mali. A high-level coordination meeting kicked off on February 19 in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, bringing together representatives from Caritas Burkina Faso, Caritas Mali, Caritas Niger, and Caritas Senegal. These organizations, which have collaborated since 2007 under the Sahel Caritas Platform, are working to strengthen regional emergency response capabilities.
building a unified regional response
The week-long gathering, which concludes on February 23, focuses on establishing a robust communication and operational framework. Key participants include information officers and emergency response coordinators from each national Caritas branch. Their goal is to create a seamless regional system that enhances crisis preparedness and intervention strategies across borders.
driving collective action through emergency preparedness
This initiative is part of the broader Emergency Appeal 28/2012, titled “Project to Strengthen Global Preparedness and Response Capacities of Caritas to Humanitarian Emergencies Caused by the Crisis in Mali.” The project aims to equip local and regional teams with the tools and protocols needed to respond swiftly to evolving threats.
Father Isidore Ouédraogo, Executive Secretary of Caritas Burkina Faso, emphasized the importance of unified action. “This meeting is not just about sharing information; it’s about forging a common operational culture that ensures no community is left behind in times of crisis,” he stated. By aligning communication strategies and emergency protocols, the Caritas network seeks to maximize its impact in supporting vulnerable populations.
confronting the scale of displacement
One of the most pressing challenges in the region is the displacement of Malians fleeing instability. Neighboring countries have welcomed approximately 300,000 refugees, placing immense strain on local resources and humanitarian infrastructure. The Caritas network is prioritizing coordinated efforts to provide essential aid, shelter, and psychosocial support to those affected.
