Ongoing road projects, completed milestones, and structural network updates were highlighted during a public briefing led by Public Works Minister Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi in Yaoundé on June 11, 2026. The event, held at the Government Action Exhibition, focused on revitalizing the national road network.

The Minister addressed media professionals, road users, and exhibition visitors, presenting a mid-term review of the 2020–2030 National Development Strategy. He outlined progress since early 2026 and identified key challenges slowing road project execution. Emphasis was placed on long-term measures to enhance the quality and connectivity of Cameroon’s road infrastructure, with the structural network identified as a priority for the Ministry’s interventions.

The Minister reiterated that road infrastructure development serves as a catalyst for economic growth and territorial cohesion. He stressed that his department’s initiatives align with President Paul Biya’s commitments under the National Development Strategy 2020–2030.

In reviewing the mid-term progress, he reported that nearly 2,442 kilometers of roads have been paved and approximately 833 kilometers of degraded routes rehabilitated. However, he acknowledged persistent delays, particularly in routine road maintenance.

The main obstacles to efficiency include security concerns in certain project zones, cumbersome financing procedures, prolonged market awarding processes, cash flow challenges for contractors, and limited funding allocated to road maintenance.

Despite these hurdles, the Minister highlighted significant progress over the past five years. The total length of paved roads increased from 8,498 kilometers in 2020 to nearly 10,939 kilometers by the end of 2025, averaging over 488 kilometers of new paved roads annually.

Looking ahead, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi outlined 2026’s initiatives as part of the President’s High Directives, prioritizing the structural road network, infrastructure quality improvement, and enhanced territorial connectivity.
