Burkina Faso’s traoré regime tightens media control, canal+ penalized

Under the guise of upholding audiovisual sovereignty and protecting consumer rights, authorities in Burkina Faso have escalated their efforts to control public discourse. The unprecedented 200 million FCFA fine levied against Canal+ International by the Superior Council of Communication (CSC) cannot be dismissed as a mere administrative or commercial dispute. Instead, it represents a calculated and systematic strategy aimed at stifling all dissenting voices and imposing a strict lockdown on information flow.

Regulation weaponized for political aims

The official justification put forth by the CSC—ensuring subscribers have unrestricted access to channels from Radiodiffusion Télévision du Burkina (RTB)—serves as a smokescreen. Beneath these technical grievances and legal directives lies a more troubling reality: the regime’s unwavering determination to exert absolute authority over all content broadcast within the nation’s borders.

By targeting a major international distributor like Canal+, the current administration isn’t merely enforcing an agreement. It is delivering an unequivocal message to the entire media landscape: no platform, including satellite broadcasters, will evade governmental scrutiny.

The specter of contentious content: fear of open debate

This intensified crackdown on Canal+ is far from coincidental. It emerges amidst heightened tensions surrounding the group’s broadcasts, particularly news programs and political debate shows featured in its packages. The moment a television panel critically examines the security situation, offers a platform to opposition figures, or questions official narratives, the regulatory apparatus swings into action.

The regime no longer tolerates dissenting analysis. A broadcast deemed unfavorable, an investigation considered too probing, or an unaligned guest is now sufficient to provoke the wrath of institutions ostensibly tasked with safeguarding press freedom. The objective is crystal clear: compel broadcasters into preemptive self-censorship to avert crippling financial penalties or outright license revocation.

Towards a singular narrative and controlled information

This recent decision is yet another link in a chain of repressive measures targeting independent journalism in Burkina Faso:

  • Repeated Suspensions: Numerous international and local media outlets have already faced temporary or permanent shutdowns for merely reporting facts not endorsed by the General Staff or the presidency.
  • Intimidation of Local Press: Independent journalists and analysts now operate under constant pressure, exposed to risks of forced requisitions in the field or prosecution for “demoralizing the troops.”
  • Creation of an Information Vacuum: By restricting access to major international news platforms and co-opting national media, the regime confines citizens to a single, government-approved narrative.

The risk of detrimental isolation for the populace

By transforming the communication regulator into a political instrument, Burkina Faso’s authorities risk depriving citizens of their fundamental right to diverse and verified information.

Far from being an act of patriotic resolve, the accumulation of these sanctions against media outlets underscores a growing nervousness in the face of factual truth. In its pursuit to neutralize all counter-powers and silence dissident voices, the government does not strengthen its legitimacy; rather, it further isolates the country from the global community and leaves the door open for propaganda.
