The administration led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré has announced the uncovering of a significant network of dishonest officials within the Ouagadougou Court of Appeal. These judicial officers, apprehended in October, face allegations of accepting payments to influence legal rulings.
Significant irregularities within Burkina Faso’s judiciary
According to an official statement reviewed on Thursday, approximately ten senior judicial figures in Burkina Faso, including chamber presidents, a prosecutor general, and an investigating judge, are currently facing charges related to corruption. These arrests, which took place throughout October, followed extensive hearings that exposed “a widespread network of unethical personnel at the Ouagadougou Court of Appeal,” as stated by Captain Farouk Azaria Sorgho, spokesperson for Korag. Korag is the body responsible for implementing the “popular progressive revolution” advocated by the military government.

Substantial financial implications
The spokesperson confirmed that “considerable sums of money were involved in corrupt and influential acts, leading to biased investigations and prejudiced judgments.” A specific corruption case involving about ten customs officers — who were acquitted after a dismissal of charges — is under scrutiny. Korag has labeled this outcome a “judicial charade,” asserting that the decision “undermines the fight against corruption.”
Military regime pledges intensified anti-corruption efforts
Drawing inspiration from the figure of Thomas Sankara, Captain Traoré’s administration, which assumed power in 2022, has positioned the anti-corruption campaign as a central tenet of its agenda. “We will intensify the battle against corruption and the impunity of judicial actors,” Captain Sorgho affirmed, while also highlighting a “severe breakdown within the justice system.”
The military government, often criticized for suppressing dissent, aims to project an image of resolve against internal misconduct that could tarnish its reputation.
