Bénin’s president arrives in Niamey, signaling potential diplomatic thaw with Niger

Béninese President Romuald Wadagni arrived in Niamey on Tuesday for an official visit, a significant development that could pave the way for a normalization of relations between Bénin and Niger. Ties between the two West African nations have been severely strained since the military coup in Niger in July 2023, which brought a new regime to power.

Upon his arrival in the Nigerien capital, President Wadagni received a welcome from Niger’s transitional leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani. This marks the first time a Béninese president has visited Niger since the military government assumed control, a period characterized by persistent political and security tensions between the two countries.

Following a prior trip to Nigeria, President Wadagni chose to make Niger his second destination, underscoring the importance he places on fostering close regional relationships. The Béninese presidency indicated that this initiative forms part of a broader strategy to enhance dialogue with all of Bénin’s bordering nations.

Discussions between the two heads of state are expected to focus heavily on critical security matters. Both countries are grappling with an escalating jihadist threat in their shared border regions. For several years, areas in northern Bénin and western Niger have been subjected to frequent attacks by armed groups linked to extremist movements active across the Sahel.

Earlier indications of a potential easing of tensions emerged during President Wadagni’s inauguration in Cotonou, an event attended by Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine. Furthermore, Nigerien state media has recently amplified messages highlighting the deep historical and cultural bonds shared by the populations of both countries.

After his stop in Niamey, the Béninese president is scheduled to continue his regional tour to Burkina Faso, another nation under military rule and an ally of Niger within the Alliance of Sahel States. This series of diplomatic engagements is widely interpreted as a concerted effort to re-establish dialogue with key Sahelian capitals and cultivate a climate of regional cooperation.
