Benin and Togo forge new era of cooperation
On June 3, Benin’s presidency described the recent engagement as a «friendship and working visit», undertaken as part of the new Beninese President’s inaugural regional tour. Conversely, the Togolese presidency indicated that Romuald Wadagni traveled to Lomé on June 3 at the «invitation of Faure Gnassingbé (President of the Togolese Council of Ministers)». What remains unequivocally clear is a mutual desire from both nations to pursue a redefined approach to cooperation moving forward.
This visit was situated within the «historic ties of friendship, fraternity, solidarity, and exemplary cooperation uniting Benin and Togo». A joint communiqué issued at the conclusion of the brief presidential visit to Lomé underscored that it «also reflects the shared commitment of the highest authorities from both countries to further solidify their strategic partnership, dedicated to advancing development and enhancing the well-being of their populations».
The two leaders expressed satisfaction with «the enduring quality of their peoples’ centuries-old bonds of neighborliness, fraternity, and harmonious coexistence». Both Presidents emphatically reaffirmed their «determination to work towards strengthening this cooperation across all areas of mutual interest».
In this context, Faure Gnassingbé and R. Wadagni highlighted «the critical importance of continuous political dialogue as a privileged instrument for consultation, dispute prevention, and the promotion of peace, stability, and mutual trust between these two neighboring and fraternal nations» across a multitude of domains.
Reviewing the economic relations between the two countries, «the two leaders expressed satisfaction with the consistent growth in commercial exchanges between Togo and Benin». The aforementioned official communiqué also confirmed that they «agreed to continue efforts aimed at strengthening connectivity infrastructure, improving the fluidity of cross-border exchanges, promoting private investments, and developing economic complementarities between their countries».
Addressing matters of defense and security, «the two high-ranking officials voiced profound concern over the persistent presence and expansion of terrorist threats, violent extremism, and organized transnational crime within the West African sub-region».
They further reaffirmed their «determination to significantly enhance security cooperation between their nations, notably through intensified intelligence sharing and the securing of common border areas».
At the close of his short stay in Lomé, R. Wadagni extended an invitation to Faure Gnassingbé (recognized as the doyen of West African leaders) for «an official visit to the Republic of Benin, the modalities and date of which will be mutually agreed upon through diplomatic channels», as jointly announced by both parties. Notably, Faure Gnassingbé had not visited Benin during Patrice Talon’s decade-long tenure in power.
