AS Monaco suffers dramatic comeback defeat to Strasbourg in final Ligue 1 match

An early 4-1 lead evaporated as AS Monaco suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 defeat to Strasbourg in the final game of the Ligue 1 season, ending their campaign in disappointing seventh place.

In a tactical shift for the must-win encounter, manager Sébastien Pocognoli reverted to a 4-2-3-1 formation. Denis Zakaria partnered Lamine Camara in midfield, with Ansu Fati deployed as the creative playmaker behind striker Folarin Balogun. Simon Adingra returned to the left flank as the team faced Strasbourg in front of a sparse 250 away supporters in Alsace.

The opening exchanges reflected Monaco’s aggressive approach, with high pressing and quick ball recoveries dominating the early exchanges. The strategy paid off in the 10th minute when Camara intercepted a misplaced pass from El Mourabet, slotting the ball past the goalkeeper to open the scoring. Strasbourg fought back against the run of play when Martial Godo equalised in the 34th minute, but the principality side restored their lead before halftime as Fati struck from close range.

Just ten minutes into the second half, a deflected strike from Balogun—initially aimed at goal—ricocheted off Strasbourg defender Ismaël Doukouré into his own net, putting Monaco 4-1 up. What followed, however, was nothing short of a collapse as the home side launched a stunning comeback.

Diego Moreira pulled one back for Strasbourg, followed by Sébastian Nanasi’s equaliser in the 72nd minute. Godo then completed the stunning turnaround with a delicate chip over the Monaco goalkeeper just minutes from time. Paris Brunner came close to salvaging a point with a header in the 87th minute, but it was too late—the game had slipped away.

Pocognoli admits Monaco’s mental fragility

“We started strongly and controlled the first half well. At 4-1, some might have thought the match was decided, but we allowed Strasbourg to claw their way back.” The Belgian coach reflected on the team’s collapse in the post-match press conference. “This isn’t the first time this season we’ve conceded multiple goals in short spells when our intensity drops. Our mental resilience has been inconsistent.” He continued, “We had everything in hand, yet we lacked the consistency needed to finish the game as winners. That’s the simple truth.”

A season of unfulfilled potential

Ending the 2025-2026 campaign in seventh place means Monaco will miss out on European football next season, following two consecutive appearances in the Champions League. Pocognoli acknowledged the need for introspection: “I came in with a clear vision—to rebuild identity, cohesion, and a strong foundation. While we’ve made progress, we must retain the positives and learn from what went wrong.” With the transfer window approaching, the summer will be crucial in reshaping the squad and redefining the club’s sporting project.
