Algeria continues its commitment to strengthening energy infrastructure across Africa with another landmark project. This time, the North African nation has turned its attention to Chad, where a new 40-megawatt solidarity power plant was launched in N’Djamena. The inauguration follows closely on the heels of a similar project in Niamey, Niger, where Algeria also commissioned a 40-megawatt facility earlier this year.

The latest initiative underscores Algeria’s long-standing tradition of solidarity with African nations, particularly those in the Sahel-Sahara region. This strategic zone, which shares deep historical and geographical ties with Algeria, stands to benefit significantly from enhanced energy cooperation. The project was inaugurated in the presence of Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and Chadian counterpart Allamaye Halina, marking a new chapter in Algerian-Chadian relations.

The Algerian government has allocated a substantial $1 billion fund through its Agency for International Cooperation and Solidarity for Development (AICA) to drive sustainable development across the continent. During the ceremony, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to supporting Chad’s development through knowledge transfer, capacity building, and shared expertise in critical sectors such as energy, mining, industry, and infrastructure.

Speaking at the groundbreaking event, he highlighted the project’s profound economic, social, and humanitarian significance. He emphasized that the plant would bolster Chad’s energy capacity and support its broader development goals. The project, he noted, reflects the unshakable political will of both nations to deepen their strategic partnership, founded on solidarity, mutual growth, and shared interests.

Prime Minister Ghrieb conveyed greetings from Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Chad’s leadership and people, stressing the importance of fostering brotherly ties and reinforcing bilateral cooperation. This initiative, he explained, marks the first tangible outcomes of the high-level talks held during Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno’s official visit to Algeria in April 2026. The visit culminated in the signing of ambitious cooperation agreements spanning vital sectors.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb was received by President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno in N’Djamena, where he led a delegation to strengthen the bonds of fraternity and expand cooperation between the two countries.
