Algeria and Chad strengthen energy ties with new power plant

Algeria’s pledge to build a 40-megawatt power plant in Chad is set to deepen the strategic partnership between Algiers and N’Djamena, officials confirmed during a landmark groundbreaking ceremony.

The inauguration event, led by Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb alongside his Chadian counterpart Allamaye Halina, underscores a growing commitment to mutual development and regional stability. The facility, powered by advanced gas turbines, will significantly boost electricity supply to Chad’s capital and surrounding areas, addressing urgent energy needs while reinforcing cross-border cooperation.

Sonelgaz International to deliver the project under presidential mandate

The initiative falls under Algeria’s broader energy cooperation strategy, guided by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives. Sonelgaz International, a subsidiary of the national energy group, has been entrusted with executing the project, which includes detailed engineering plans and phased implementation timelines. The facility is designed not only to meet current demand but also to enhance long-term energy security for Chad’s growing population.

Speaking as Algeria’s representative at the ceremony, Prime Minister Ghrieb highlighted the project’s broader significance. «This partnership reflects the unwavering political will of our two nations to build a robust, mutually beneficial alliance founded on shared growth and solidarity», he stated. He emphasized that the power plant symbolizes one of the first tangible outcomes of high-level discussions between Algerian and Chadian leaders, including President Tebboune’s official visit to Chad in April 2026.

Beyond energy: a vision for integrated African development

Ghrieb expanded on Algeria’s broader continental ambitions, stressing that «effective African cooperation must translate into concrete projects that directly improve the lives of our people». He framed the initiative as part of a larger effort to foster regional integration, pointing to complementary initiatives such as the trans-Saharan highway, fiber-optic connectivity, and enhanced air transport links. These projects aim to reduce isolation in landlocked regions and unlock new economic opportunities across West and North Africa.

Unified stance on regional challenges

On regional security and governance, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Algeria and Chad’s alignment, declaring, «We remain committed to coordinated action on shared challenges, guided by the principle of African solutions for African problems». He underscored the importance of respecting national sovereignty while advancing collective development goals, reinforcing the message that both countries are prioritizing stability and prosperity through joint efforts.

The groundbreaking ceremony marks a pivotal moment in Algeria-Chad relations, with officials from both nations pledging continued collaboration. «On behalf of President Tebboune, I reaffirm Algeria’s steadfast commitment to supporting Chad’s development and strengthening our bilateral partnership for the benefit of both our peoples», Ghrieb concluded.
