The family of Cameroon’s former Supreme Court chief justice has released the full funeral schedule for Alexis Dipanda Mouelle.

Cameroon’s inaugural Supreme Court president will soon be laid to rest. Family members have confirmed that funeral ceremonies for Alexis Dipanda Mouelle will take place from Monday, June 22 to Saturday, June 27, 2026.

From June 22 through Wednesday, June 24, 2026, the program includes evening prayers and gatherings at the family home in the Bastos district of Yaoundé, Cameroon’s political capital, between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM. On Thursday, June 25, 2026, at 10:00 AM, the body will be taken from the Yaoundé General Hospital morgue. This will be followed by official judicial tributes at the Supreme Court.

Bonakou-Bwapaki Village

At 3:00 PM on the same day, a memorial mass will be held at the Basilica of Mary Queen of the Apostles in Mvolye. The program concludes with a candlelit vigil at the family home. On Friday, June 26, 2026, the funeral procession will depart for Bonakou-Bwapaki village. Along the route, a stop is scheduled at the family compound in Bonakouamouang by Akwa in Douala, followed by a vigil in his hometown. The burial will take place on Saturday, June 27, 2026.

Alexis Dipanda Mouelle served as a distinguished Cameroonian magistrate who left a lasting legacy in the country’s judicial and political history, leading the Supreme Court as its first president from 1990 to 2014. Born on March 25, 1942, in Bonakou-Bwapaki (Littoral region), he passed away on May 4, 2026, at the age of 84.

Daniel Mekobe Sone

After studying at the University of Paris, he joined Cameroon’s judiciary in 1965. He steadily climbed the ranks, becoming Secretary-General of the Ministry of Justice in 1975. In 1986, he was appointed head of the Supreme Court (later formally titled First President), serving in this role for 24 years until his retirement on December 31, 2014, when Daniel Mekobe Sone took over.

His career is notably tied to the official validation of the 1992 presidential election. He declared Paul Biya the winner (39.98% of votes) over prominent opposition leader Ni John Fru Ndi (35.9%), a decision that sparked significant controversy amid the return to multiparty democracy.

International Contributions

Beyond Cameroon’s borders, he served as president of the 17th session of the UN Committee against Torture, a member of the Arbitration Chamber of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, and a member of the International Institute of French-Speaking Law (IDEF).
