The Ministry of Health and Social Development in Mali officially received 39 robust 4×4 all-terrain vehicles on Thursday, February 5, 2026. This significant delivery aims to fortify the nation’s health infrastructure and expand access to critical health services, especially vaccination programs, across Mali’s most vulnerable regions. The handover ceremony took place at the Ministry of Health’s headquarters within the Cité administrative de Bamako.
These essential vehicles represent an investment valued at 689 million CFA francs. According to Minister of Health, Assa Badiallo Touré, this acquisition is a testament to the robust and productive collaboration between the Ministry of Health and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Minister Touré emphasized, « This donation is neither the first nor will it be the last, » recalling that in 2023, 68 vehicles were previously acquired with funding from the World Bank to bolster COVID-19 vaccination efforts. She also indicated that additional vital equipment is anticipated later in 2026.
« These new vehicles are crucial for enhancing the operational capabilities of our health facilities, particularly in monitoring health interventions and vaccination campaigns, » stated the Minister during her address. She urged all beneficiaries and drivers to prioritize meticulous maintenance of these assets, highlighting the imperative to preserve this valuable equipment as the Ministry continues its efforts to expand its service vehicle fleet amidst current challenges.
Representing the technical and financial partners, UNICEF’s representative in Mali, Fosca Giulidori, highlighted the profound symbolism of the event. « This occasion transcends a mere transfer of keys; it embodies a powerful act of international solidarity, underscored by Gavi’s unwavering commitment to accelerating global vaccination and ensuring equitable access to life-saving vaccines, » she declared.
Fosca Giulidori further explained that these 39 vehicles serve as critical lifelines for Mali’s health system. They will facilitate the secure transport of vaccines and other medical supplies, adhering strictly to standards, to even the most remote health centers. Furthermore, they will enable the deployment of mobile health teams to hard-to-reach communities and bolster essential services such as immunization campaigns, nutritional monitoring, and other vital care for the benefit of all Malians.
