40 nations back Morocco’s Sahara sovereignty at geneva human rights council

40 nations declare support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara

Forty countries reaffirmed their backing for Morocco’s territorial integrity during the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The declaration, delivered by Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva Omar Zniber, emphasized that the Western Sahara issue remains aligned with the political path outlined by the United Nations under the guidance of the Security Council.

The statement highlighted that Morocco’s autonomy initiative represents a serious and realistic foundation for achieving a lasting political solution to the conflict, while also reiterating support for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2797. This resolution aims to reactivate the political process with the involvement of all relevant parties.

Countries backing the initiative commended Morocco’s commitment to integrating residents of the Tindouf camps and ensuring their rights on equal footing with other citizens. They also praised Morocco’s cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms, noting it demonstrates a positive commitment to advancing and safeguarding rights and freedoms.

The communiqué stressed that the establishment of general consulates by multiple countries in Laayoune and Dakhla reflects growing international support for Morocco and contributes to strengthening development, investment, and regional cooperation in the southern provinces. The group concluded by emphasizing that resolving the conflict will serve as a catalyst for integration and development across African and Arab regions.
