World cup 2026: belgium tops group g ahead of Egypt and Iran

Belgium clinches top spot in Group G, Egypt secures second place

A commanding performance saw Belgium defeat New Zealand 5-1, while Egypt settled for a 1-1 draw with Iran, sealing their historic first-ever qualification for the Round of 16.

The Red Devils delivered a masterclass against New Zealand, marking their first World Cup victory since beating Canada in 2022. Their dominance was evident from the start, with 16 first-half shots—four on target—showcasing their technical superiority. Leandro Trossard broke the deadlock in the 28th minute, capitalizing on a loose ball that bounced off New Zealand’s Tim Payne before slotting home.

Belgium’s tactical adjustments pay off

Belgium’s midfield, anchored by Kevin De Bruyne and Hans Vanaken, controlled the tempo but struggled with final precision. Trossard doubled the lead after halftime, converting a rebound from De Bruyne’s effort, while Romelu Lukaku added two goals, including his 91st international strike. Substitutes Alexis Saelemaekers and Nicolas Raskin sealed the win with a late flurry, including Lukaku’s 12th goal in major tournaments.

Rudi Garcia’s substitutions injected fresh energy, though a late consolation goal by New Zealand’s Elijah Just was inconsequential. Belgium’s 5-1 victory ensured their top spot in Group G, with a superior goal difference over second-placed Egypt.

Egypt survives Iran scare to reach Round of 16

Egypt’s path to qualification was far from smooth. Mahmoud Saber’s early strike was canceled out by Iran’s Mehdi Taremi just nine minutes later, plunging the Pharaohs into disarray. Despite Mostafa Shobeir’s penalty save, Rezaeian’s equalizer revived Iran’s hopes, forcing Egypt to endure a nerve-wracking final stretch.

In stoppage time, Iran nearly scored twice—first via Sardar Azmoun’s header hitting the crossbar, then a disallowed goal for an offside call. Egypt’s relief was palpable as the final whistle blew, securing their historic first appearance in the Round of 16.

Irán, meanwhile, must rely on other results to progress as one of the best third-placed teams. Their spirited performance fell short, leaving them on the brink of elimination unless luck favors their cause.
