Willy Mengue urges Equinoxe TV to balance coverage of MRC leadership debate
Prominent opposition leader Willy Mengue has called on Equinoxe TV to provide fair and balanced coverage following a recent broadcast featuring a MRC party figure’s defense of Maurice Kamto’s contested return to leadership.
Opposition leader Willy Mengue has formally requested Equinoxe TV to provide balanced coverage of the MRC party’s leadership crisis after its recent broadcast.
His demand follows an appearance by MRC Vice President Mamadou Mota on the show “La vérité en face” to defend Maurice Kamto’s controversial return to the party’s presidency. Mengue argues that the network must now offer equal airtime to contesting factions to ensure fairness and journalistic integrity.
In a strongly worded open letter to Equinoxe TV’s CEO, Mengue emphasized the need for “equitable information treatment,” “journalistic truth-seeking,” and “the right to information.” He stated, “There is an urgent need to organize, if not a direct debate between the two factions, then a substantial right of reply to the ‘Vérité en Face’ broadcast addressing the contested return of Professor Maurice Kamto to the MRC leadership. While you granted airtime to political ally Mamadou Mota on this critical issue, journalistic fairness demands that you provide the same opportunity to the opposition, including myself as their representative.”
Mota’s appearance defended Kamto’s return, which Mengue describes as a “fraudulent maneuver.” He added, “Equinoxe TV, known as the ‘people’s channel that reports beyond the surface,’ can only present a just and equitable account of the MRC’s constitutional tampering to facilitate a resigned member’s fraudulent return to power if it grants the requested right of reply. The Cameroonian people are watching this matter closely.”
