Why did CAF withdraw Senegal’s CAN 2025 title so late

The final of the 2025 African Cup of Nations (CAN) has ignited a major controversy. The African Football Confederation (CAF) recently decided to revoke Senegal’s title in favor of Morocco—two months after the final, following a Moroccan appeal. While the ruling itself has sparked debate, the timing of the decision has raised even more questions.

a controversial ruling after the final

Morocco, the losing finalist, filed a complaint shortly after the January 18 match. The Moroccan delegation argued that Senegal’s players had violated FIFA Articles 82 and 84, which state that a team leaving the pitch must forfeit the match. Initial sanctions included a five-match suspension for Senegal’s coach, Pape Tiaw. However, Morocco appealed this decision, leading to the unexpected ruling—issued late on a Tuesday evening—that stripped Senegal of its title.

Nathalie Iannetta, Director of Sports at Radio France, explained on France Inter: “The reality is that this final, played on January 18, was already contested the very next day by the Moroccan delegation. They invoked FIFA regulations, and sanctions were imposed. But when the first verdict was appealed, the final decision came as a shock to everyone—even the Moroccans themselves issued a statement clarifying they sought justice, not to undermine Senegal’s sporting performance.”

Senegal fights back

The Senegalese Football Federation reacted immediately, announcing plans to appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The move has divided the football community: some insist on strict adherence to regulations, while others argue that a title won on the field should not be revoked months later. “This final will likely go down in history as the longest in football,” Iannetta concluded.

what’s next?

The legal battle is far from over. With Senegal refusing to accept the ruling, the case will now be examined by the international sports tribunal, leaving fans and analysts eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this unprecedented saga.
