The 27th anniversary of Morocco’s Throne Day brought a significant diplomatic message from Washington. In a letter addressed to King Mohammed VI, outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump reconfirmed America’s unwavering stance on Western Sahara, endorsing the Moroccan autonomy plan as the cornerstone for a lasting solution.
Washington embraces Morocco’s autonomy proposal
In his communication, the U.S. leader emphasized that his administration recognizes Morocco’s full sovereignty over Western Sahara. «The United States is unequivocal: we acknowledge Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and endorse the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a serious, credible, and realistic foundation for a fair and sustainable resolution,» Trump stated.
He dismissed alternative approaches, calling them counterproductive and unacceptable. «Any other path only prolongs the status quo, which is untenable,» he wrote. «This dispute must conclude without delay, and the United States will continue to drive progress toward that end,» the president added.
Decades of partnership highlighted
Beyond the Sahara issue, Trump celebrated the «250 years of shared history and enduring friendship» between the two nations. He described the bond as «built on mutual trust and respect,» underscoring the long-standing alliance between Washington and Rabat.
The U.S. president also praised King Mohammed VI’s «wise leadership,» hailing him as «a pillar of stability» in the region. He lauded Morocco’s pivotal role in fostering regional peace, combating extremism, and securing both nations’ interests, particularly through the Abraham Accords.
Sahel security and economic collaboration on the agenda
Trump announced plans for enhanced cooperation to bolster security across the Sahel, reinforcing joint efforts against transnational threats. Economically, he directed his administration to expand collaboration in key sectors, including technology, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense—both within Morocco and its southern provinces.
«Together, we will usher in a new era,» he declared, urging a partnership that prioritizes the welfare and aspirations of both peoples.
